Dyson's Nurovi Line: A New Wave of Robotic Cleaners

Dyson’s latest robots offer a mix of old and new tech, promising a cleaner future but keeping some exclusivity.

Around this time of year, new products launch left and right. And now, Dyson, one of the big names in vacuum cleaners, just launched three innovative products. The new Dyson Nurovi line includes the Dyson R1 Nurovi Dry, the Dyson R2 Nurovi Wash+Dry, and the Dyson R3 Nurovi Spot+Scrub UV.

This robot vacuum line has a new look, but the technology has changed too. All three Nurovi models share a light gray color scheme, but the base stations keep the canister-style compartments. They also feature lidar laser-precision navigation and the most expensive model now uses a UV light to help find stains on your floors. Finally, they have what Dyson calls a Twin-Capture System to pick up dust and debris on both hard floors and carpets. The cheapest R1 model is a vacuum only, while the R2 and R3 are both vacuum-mop hybrids. But the R2 will only be available at Costco, while the R1 and R3 will be available on Dyson's website.

Dyson’s Nurovi R1 is a vacuum-only robot, but like its siblings, it uses lidar to navigate and features the Twin-Capture tech. It promises a much better experience than the Dyson Vis Nav from a few years ago. It's an interesting option if you have mostly carpet and soft flooring that doesn't need a mop job, but I'm curious to see how it compares, since you can find other vacuums for this price that do both.

The Dyson R2 Nurovi Wash+Dry is the most intriguing. It's a great price point—nearly half the price of the Spot+Scrub model—but has lidar navigation and the new Twin-Capture technology. It has triangle-style pads for mopping, which is unique and something I hope works as well as I imagine. It promises 21,000 Pa of suction, which is a nice amount of power. The only downside is that you need a Costco membership to purchase one, as it's a Costco exclusive.

The Dyson R3 Nurovi Spot+Scrub UV is the new top-of-the-line model of Dyson's robot vacuums. I wasn't super impressed by the previous Spot+Scrub Ai, since it didn't really seem to find stains. My favorite robot vacuum uses UV successfully to spot stains on floors, so I'm curious whether this Dyson model will deliver a similarly great experience. This vacuum still incorporates AI, which Dyson says can identify up to 200 types of household substances and clean them until they're gone. It packs a higher suction power than the R2 (30,000 Pa), though I don't always find the highest suction makes for the best results. Keep an eye out for my review of all three Dyson models once we test.
