Roku has unveiled a new feature called Roku Labs, which introduces experimental apps directly to your TV. These apps, still in development, range from weather tracking and stock updates to a game called Roku Dash, where you fly a UFO through a neon cityscape.
The addition of first-party apps suggests Roku is looking to increase its presence in the connected home market. However, it faces stiff competition from rivals like Google and Amazon, whose AI-powered services are more advanced.
Notably, the new Home Screen is becoming available in more regions, including Mexico and Brazil, with tailored features for each area. Additionally, Roku is introducing bundled streaming plans, making subscription services more cost-effective.
Roku is also opening up its software for the Roku remote, inviting developers to create their own applications and devices. This could lead to a more diverse and innovative ecosystem on the platform.
