Tesla has expanded its Powershare Home Backup feature to the Model 3 and Model Y, allowing these electric vehicles to serve as backup batteries for your home during power outages. However, this comes with caveats: you'll need Tesla's Powerwall 3, and not all older models are eligible. Premium and Performance models can provide up to a couple of days of power, though shorter than the Cybertruck's promise. Other car brands like Kia and GM also offer vehicle-to-home power, adding to the growing network of smart home technologies.
The feature is currently available in the US and Puerto Rico, but not in Canada or for larger models like the Model S or Model X. Tesla's Powershare Grid Support is still exclusive to the Cybertruck, highlighting the ongoing development in this space.
While the Model 3 and Model Y can extend home backup power to over two days, only those ordered from October 1st onward are guaranteed to include the PCS2 Lite inverter required for the feature to work. This means some older models might not be compatible, leaving owners to check their vehicle's specifications.
The ability to use EVs as backup power is an exciting development in renewable energy and smart home technology. It's another step towards a more resilient and sustainable future, where our vehicles can serve multiple roles beyond just transportation.
