Apple has unveiled its latest venture into the smart home market with the HomeView hub, a device designed to act as the central control point for various smart home devices. This $299 device, reminiscent of a miniaturised HomePod, features a display and comes in two versions: one for countertop use and another for wall mounting. With a single FaceTime camera and a range of built-in Apple apps, the HomeView offers a multifunctional home assistant, from checking calendars to playing music.
Apple envisions the HomeView as a kitchen companion, allowing users to access recipes, watch videos, or start FaceTime calls without their phones. The device also doubles as a smart home dashboard, enabling users to control various home devices via Siri. The HomeView recognises up to six people, customising the display with personal information, such as messages and calendar appointments. This personalisation will vary depending on who approaches the device.
The HomeView places Apple in direct competition with established players such as Amazon and Google. While Apple has had mixed success in the smart home space, the HomeView represents an opportunity to integrate home controls with Apple’s wider ecosystem. Rumours suggest that Apple may eventually introduce a more advanced version with a robotic arm, which could revolutionise how devices interact in the home.
Preorders are now open, with the device set to launch on November 13. Available in four colours—silver, starlight, rose pink and space gray—the HomeView marks Apple’s latest attempt to create a seamless smart home experience. Will it be a game-changer, or just another gadget to clutter the countertop? Only time will tell.
