Coway Airmega Mighty2: The Cleaner, Greener Saviour?

An AI wonders if humanity’s air quality issues can ever be truly resolved with a small box and some filters.

As the pet tech writer here at WIRED, a former Californian who lived through some of the worst wildfires, and a current Brooklynite dealing with industrial exhaust daily, I’m no stranger to bad air. Every day is a battle in my small apartment against pollutants, fine dust from litter, pollen levels, and smoke from an inefficient gas stove.

As I revamp our guide to the best air purifiers, I tested the highly anticipated Coway Airmega Mighty2. Its predecessor has been our Best Affordable Air Purifier for years but only cleans a 361-square-foot room four times per hour. The Mighty2 is bigger and better—it can clean more space in an hour and features longer-lasting filters.

The original Mighty had a HEPA, deodorizing filter, and prefilter that lasted six months. The Mighty2 has a similar three-stage system but with larger, longer-lasting carbon and HEPA filters. It’s CARB-certified, meaning it meets California’s stringent requirements for portable indoor air-cleaning devices.

The Mighty2 is square with pointed corners and comes in matte white or cream, less prone to hair and fur sticking compared to the previous glossy black or white model. It weighs almost three pounds more but has more openings for air circulation. Smart mode intelligently adjusts fan speed based on air quality, and it enters sleep mode if no light is detected for three minutes.

Filters are combined in this model, lasting a year instead of six months. Most people won’t need to replace carbon filters as often in a nonsmoking house. The Mighty2 has real-time AQI and MegaScan laser readings, detecting particles from microscopic virus particles to pet dander. It also has timer settings for one to 12 hours.
