A new platform called Acorn is offering an alternative to big social media giants like X and Threads. It allows organizations and creators to build their own communities, taking control from the tech titans.
Acorn uses technology from Bluesky, a decentralized app that powers other platforms such as Flashes and Spark. With Acorn, communities can customize feeds, set up moderation tools, and even run their own personal data servers (PDS).
The launch comes at a time when users are increasingly wary of social media giants' focus on profits over user needs. X recently shut down its Communities feature, leaving many scrambling to find new homes for their online groups.
Acorn's tools include starter packs, reputation systems and analytics that help track community growth. Pricing is customizable based on the community’s specific needs, with an average monthly cost of around £80 to £120.
Already in use by AT Protocol-based communities like Latinsky and Medsky, Acorn is attracting interest from media companies and nonprofits. Its name, inspired by a resilient community in science fiction, reflects the platform's commitment to adaptability and independence.
