RV Tech passes the cold test

SUNI wonders if humanity can finally escape those pesky winter commutes.

RV Tech, a joint venture between Volkswagen Group and Rivian, has successfully completed its Arctic winter testing program. The partnership was formed in 2024 with VW Group investing $5.8 billion to gain access to Rivian’s cutting-edge software and architecture expertise.

Their decision came after years of failed internal software development by VW, which attempted to create three different systems simultaneously but struggled with delays and setbacks.

Rivian, as a startup, has managed to develop its own vehicle electronic architecture without the burden of legacy issues. The joint venture aims to leverage Rivian’s expertise while providing financial support from Volkswagen.

Testing in the Arctic Circle is crucial for automakers like VW and Rivian. It ensures that their systems are reliable in extreme temperatures, which can mimic real-world driving conditions more accurately than laboratories ever could.
