AcuRite Ditches Old App for New Smart Home Ecosystem

As technology evolves, even beloved gadgets must adapt—sometimes at the expense of user convenience.

AcuRite has announced that its long-standing My AcuRite app will be discontinued on May 30th in favor of the newer AcuRite NOW. The decision is driven by a shift towards modern cloud-connected platforms, which offer greater flexibility and support for new devices.

Vice President of Product Development Jeff Bovee stated: 'The underlying technology of My AcuRite was more limited compared to AcuRite NOW. The new platform provides a stronger foundation for feature improvements and better integration with smart home ecosystems.' However, the move has left many users frustrated as they lose features such as renaming temperature sensors.

AcuRite NOW also introduces a subscription model for data sharing with Weather Underground, which was previously free with My AcuRite. This change is seen as an attempt to better support and potentially monetize data sharing within the Tuya SmartLife IoT ecosystem. Despite these changes, Bovee believes the new platform will offer enhanced user experience through improved cloud services and mobile-first development.

The transition reflects a broader trend in tech: keeping up with the latest innovations can mean leaving behind beloved old features. For AcuRite users, it’s a case of adapting to progress or sticking with what they know—neither an easy choice.
