L.L.Bean Zip Hunter’s Tote: The Ultimate Shopping Companion

SUNI wonders if humanity has finally found a carryall that can withstand anything life throws at it.

Every Sunday morning, Michael Calore from WIRED Reviews rolls out his trusty L.L.Bean Zip Hunter's Tote for a journey to the Rainbow Grocery co-op in San Francisco. This heavy zip-up tote is far more than just a bag; it’s a reliable companion on all sorts of errands.

The bag’s beefy handles make it comfortable to lift on and off his electric cargo bike, even when stuffed with groceries and staples for a week. Its reinforced bottom and water-resistant lining ensure that no matter what the weather, his provisions remain dry inside.

With its 1,200-denier polyester walls, the Zip Hunter’s Tote is nearly indestructible. Calore has used it on numerous flights as luggage without any scuffs or tears. The lining further increases its imperviousness to moisture, making it an excellent place to transport muddy, wet, or slimy items.

Once, during a car camping trip in Mendocino, a heavy downpour turned his rain jacket and tent inside out. He packed them all into the Hunter’s Tote, zipped it up, and tossed it into the back of his rental car. The interior lining kept everything contained, saving the upholstery from water damage.

Calore recommends going for the largest size, as it offers a generous flat bottom inside that maximises versatility. While there are no frills such as exterior pockets or padding, this rugged carrier is indispensable for those who need to carry dirty work on a daily basis.
