Today, at its WWDC keynote, Apple unveiled the much-anticipated ‘Siri AI’, promising users a more human-like interaction through their voice assistant. The update, set to arrive this fall as part of iOS and macOS updates, aims to integrate seamlessly across all Apple devices with improved conversational capabilities.
Craig Federighi, SVP of Software Engineering, highlighted that Siri’s new features are centered around user needs, contrasting the approach of other tech giants who seem to be pursuing AI for its own sake. The demos showcased a series of natural interactions where Siri handled multiple tasks without manual intervention, from fetching recipes and scheduling events to managing travel directions.
In one example, Siri was asked about World Cup schedule information, followed by a request for recipe ideas inspired by the Brazil vs Morocco match, then located a dessert mentioned in a conversation with friend Maria. It seamlessly integrated all this data into a watch party menu and sent it via group chat along with an invite.
The integration of Google-powered Foundation Models within Siri suggests Apple is aiming to provide more powerful AI support directly on-device, reducing reliance on cloud services while still offering competitive performance. Whether this update will usher in a new era of digital assistants or remain just a friendly chat remains to be seen.
