87 years old and tech-obsessed, Stewart Brand has designed his dream home to accommodate his needs with a touch of philosophy. Sitting on a wooden porch as we chatted, he explained that this bespoke structure is an extension of their romance rather than a coping mechanism for decline.
The studio, measuring 715 square feet, boasts motorized beds and accessible bathrooms. Brand’s pragmatism shines through the thoughtful design, which includes lower kitchen counters to accommodate future wheelchairs and a Japanese-style tub that serves as both bath and step.
But it's not just about practicality; Phelan speaks of maintaining agency during his illness. 'I wanted to ensure that throughout his ordeal with his illness, he would have agency, and I would have agency—not feeling like I was the nursemaid when I want to be his wife,' she said.
As we discussed the ethics of taking the cocktail for a graceful farewell, Brand joked about the house being 'the nicest coffin!' His optimism is infectious, but the underlying theme is clear: this house is both a challenge and an adventure in living.
