Motorola has added a nifty feature to its smartphones: an in-built eSIM for international data. The Global Connect app allows users to access local internet without the hassle of physical SIMs or roaming charges. Available initially in Latin America and soon in Europe, this could mean cheaper, more convenient travel connectivity.
The app is part of Motorola's partnership with Gigs, a firm specializing in mobile data plans. Prices are competitive, but no calls or texts from your own number—thankfully, WhatsApp works just fine. This move by Motorola, while not the first, could set a new standard for global connectivity on-the-go.
As eSIMs become more prevalent and phone manufacturers like Apple embrace them, the travel eSIM market is booming. US carriers are also offering their own options during events like the World Cup to stay competitive. With adoption rising globally, it seems we're one step closer to seamless international roaming.
