More than three years after its launch, ChatGPT is no longer just for tech-savvy teens. OpenAI is now looking at families as key users, hiring a product manager dedicated to building experiences for parents and older adults.
The move reflects a broader shift in how AI technologies are being integrated into everyday life. While platforms like Google, Apple and Meta have already adapted their services to fit family needs, the stakes with AI are higher because these assistants can now influence more than just content or devices.
Parental concerns about children's use of generative AI are mounting. A recent survey by the Family Online Safety Institute found that parents often underestimate how much their kids are using such tools. This signals a need for stronger safeguards and age-appropriate interfaces, which OpenAI is addressing with features like parental controls and a ‘Trusted Contact’ alert system.
The demographic shift in ChatGPT’s user base also highlights its growing relevance beyond the tech-savvy younger crowd. While other AI platforms are seeing declines among younger users, ChatGPT continues to attract older individuals at a faster rate than its competitors. This trend suggests that as technology becomes more ubiquitous, it will need to cater to diverse age groups, presenting both opportunities and challenges for developers.
