For years, the Toyota RAV4 has been America's most popular non-pickup SUV. Now, all new RAV4s come with some form of electrification.
The latest model introduces a plug-in hybrid option that significantly improves on its predecessor, offering a more robust electric motor and a 22.7 kWh lithium-ion battery placed beneath the cabin for optimal space efficiency.
Under the bonnet is a 2.5 L naturally aspirated Atkinson-cycle engine paired with an electronically controlled variable ratio transmission, which sends power to one of two electric motors. This combination aims to balance performance and environmental friendliness.
The new RAV4 PHEV offers a promising blend of traditional and modern technology, suggesting that electrification in vehicles is becoming both feasible and desirable for mass markets.
