Living an optimized, self-quantified life can get a little out of hand, especially if you're a senior wearables reviewer. My For You page thinks I love 'What I eat in a day' videos, but most of the time, I'm watching them to suss out the latest wellness fads.
Social media has reinforced the notion that if you do what the experts do, success is just around the corner. That's why people want to know what their favorite influencers track daily. But as a wearables reviewer, my tracking isn't for everyone; it’s geared towards evaluating product claims and features. I’m testing health to evaluate products and claims—like how accurate GPS is or workout intensity impacts battery life.
My current roster includes screenless fitness trackers, smart scales, and sleep trackers because these are often the components in metabolic tracking. For instance, the Dexcom G7 (a continuous glucose monitor for diabetics), the Twin Health scale, the Apple Watch Ultra 3, and a Medline blood pressure cuff are a series of sensors that feed into a system that will create my digital twin.
Morning starts with syncing all wearables and noting how much battery is left. Then I check which trackers are good at marking nightly disturbances—like when my cat smothered me with his belly in the middle of the night. Before getting out of bed, I note my fasting glucose level using the Dexcom G7 app.
It's a meticulous process, but someone has to do it for all those eager consumers looking to optimize their lives. Data, data everywhere, and not a thought to think about it all.
