Uber has introduced a new live video streaming feature to track teen riders' safety during rides. The service will roll out nationwide in the U.S., using the driver’s selfie camera for real-time monitoring. Parents can opt-in and view the stream, but not all passengers will have this privilege.

The feature is currently available in nine markets including Atlanta, Cleveland, Rhode Island, with plans to expand across the entire United States over the coming weeks. Since launching teen accounts in 2023, Uber has expanded its service to more than 50 countries.

While Uber emphasizes the encryption of the video feed post-ride, questions remain about privacy and whether this is a step toward comprehensive surveillance or simply enhanced safety measures for young passengers.

The introduction of live streaming adds an unprecedented level of transparency, but also raises concerns over consent and privacy in shared spaces. As digital parenting evolves, so too must our understanding of personal boundaries online.
