Amazon has expanded its Alexa for Shopping AI assistant with a new feature called “Update Me When,” designed to alert users to potential new purchases based on their interests and preferences. The feature can notify shoppers when a favorite brand launches new products, a TV show returns, or an artist embarks on a tour, essentially turning your smart speaker into a personal shopping concierge.
This addition to Alexa's capabilities signals a shift towards more anticipatory retail experiences. Historically, Alexa has responded to direct product queries but now it can proactively suggest items users might be interested in, without being asked. Users can manually configure these alerts for now, but the future could see Amazon automatically generating them or suggesting subscriptions based on browsing history.
Other useful features include the existing price tracking function, which alerts users when a product drops to a certain price or discount, even automatically purchasing the item if conditions are met. Additionally, Alexa can source personalized deals, create shopping guides, and compare items, making the shopping experience more convenient and tailored to individual preferences.
While this technology enhances user convenience, it also raises questions about privacy and the extent to which AI will influence our purchasing decisions. As Amazon continues to integrate AI into the shopping experience, the line between convenience and surveillance may become increasingly blurred.
