On September 1 and 2, Venus will appear near Spica, the brightest star in Virgo, making for a striking naked-eye view. On the 3rd, the moon will join the Pleiades star cluster, creating a diamond-studded celestial display. Binoculars will reveal more than the unaided eye can see.
A minor meteor shower, the Epsilon Perseids, will peak on the 9th and 10th, producing up to eight meteors per hour. The new moon will ensure dark skies, perfect for viewing. Venus will shine at its brightest on September 22, visible after sunset from the southern hemisphere.
The September equinox on the 23rd marks the change of seasons, though not something to observe directly. Neptune, the farthest planet, will be at opposition on the 26th, making it the best time to try spotting it with a telescope. September ends with the Harvest Moon, traditionally named for the northern hemisphere’s harvests.
