The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) has spent five years mapping the cosmos, creating the largest three-dimensional map ever, with 5.6 trillion pixels and 4 billion celestial objects. This map covers 75% of the sky and offers astronomers a clearer view of space beyond the Milky Way's dense band of stars.
The project, involving over 160 scientists, has already led to over 1,800 scientific papers, and its data will continue to be crucial for future cosmic surveys, including NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.
Significantly, the map hints at dark energy’s possible changes over time, suggesting it might not be a constant force. This has major implications for our understanding of the universe’s expansion. By 2027, the full five years of data could provide unprecedented insights into the universe's past and present.
