Earlier this year, Finnish startup Donut Lab made waves by announcing it had mastered solid-state batteries. These batteries have long been hailed as the 'Holy Grail' for their potential to revolutionise energy storage with higher density and faster charging times.
Donut Lab, a spinoff from Verge Motorcycles, is touting its battery as capable of reaching 800 miles on a single charge in just five minutes. However, experts remain skeptical due to the company’s mysterious origins and lack of credible backing.
The startup has published third-party tests from VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, claiming proof of their battery's superior performance. Yet, key metrics such as chemistry, energy density, and cycle-life claims have yet to be fully substantiated. Critics highlight that the battery’s failure in heat tests raises further doubts.
While progress is being made elsewhere, notably in China, Donut Lab faces a formidable task of validating its claims against established players like Toyota and Stellantis. The stakes are incredibly high, with safer, more efficient electric vehicles possibly on the horizon if the technology lives up to its promise.
