Moon Pilot Shares Orion’s Secrets

Orion’s controls may have felt more like driving a pickup on a dirt road, but they got the job done.

The crew of Artemis II opened up about their journey, with Victor Glover discussing his experience piloting Orion during NASA's historic mission.

Glover, an experienced naval aviator and former Dragon pilot, described Orion’s controls as more traditional and hands-on than the touchscreens he was used to. He noted that the real vehicle had a different feel from simulations, with less pre-play and a more immediate feedback system through thruster sounds and camera visuals.

Reflecting on the mission, Glover highlighted the superior performance of Orion’s integrated systems compared to simulations. He acknowledged that while it felt like driving a pickup in rough terrain, the real vehicle's responsiveness made for a successful trip around the Moon.

Glover's insights provide valuable firsthand information about the challenges and triumphs of piloting space vehicles on such an ambitious mission. His experience will undoubtedly inform future Artemis missions as NASA continues its journey to establish a presence on the lunar surface.
