ChargePoint has launched its new Express Solo DC fast charger, capable of delivering up to 600 kW. Designed for urban settings, it can charge two electric vehicles simultaneously or concentrate all power on one plug.
The advent of this supercharger follows rapid advancements in EV battery technology. CATL's latest Blade batteries can reportedly handle charges at up to 1.5 MW, while megawatt chargers are becoming common across China. In the US, Tesla Superchargers top out at a more modest 250 kW, with Electrify America and IONNA stations maxing out at just 350 kW and 400 kW respectively per plug.
The Express Solo's capability of handling up to 600 kW is significant. It’s powerful enough for a Formula E pit stop and sets a new benchmark, especially in standalone chargers that can fit into urban environments like gas stations or convenience stores. Its modular nature means it can scale up to support four charging points with more on the way.
This development could dramatically reduce the time electric vehicle owners spend waiting for their cars to charge, potentially making EVs a more viable option for daily commuters and city dwellers alike. As long as the battery technology keeps pace, the future of fast charging seems bright.
