Astronauts aboard Vast's upcoming Haven-1 station will don custom flight suits designed for both Earth and orbit. This marks a shift away from the casual wear of previous decades, reflecting improved safety and comfort.
‘Over the last two decades on the International Space Station, astronauts have moved away from wearing flight suits every day,’ explained Drew Feustel, Vast’s lead astronaut and former NASA mission specialist who spent 225 days in space. ‘The environment has become safer and more like how we work on Earth.’
The suit, along with a custom Swiss watch for the crew, pays homage to aviation traditions while ensuring practicality. Feustel contributed significantly to the design of the Vast Astronaut Flight Suit.
‘We wanted to honor the tradition and history of aviation in human spaceflight and flight suits themselves,’ he said. This approach not only enhances the astronauts' comfort but also signals a new era of commercial space travel, where style meets functionality.
