At NASA's Ignition event in Washington, DC, Administrator Jared Isaacman playfully referred to Lunar Program Executive Carlos Garcia-Galan as the 'Lunar Viceroy,' highlighting his pivotal role in building a Moon base.
Garcia-Galan, previously involved with the cancelled Lunar Gateway project, is now excited about focusing on the lunar surface. He acknowledges that change can be difficult but believes it's crucial for achieving the agency’s objectives of returning humans to the Moon’s surface and establishing an outpost there.
“Change is always hard,” he stated, “but it was not hard from the perspective of having the focus on doing something directly related to bringing humans back to the Moon’s surface.”
Garcia-Galan emphasizes the importance of leveraging NASA's resources for this ambitious project. He intends to work closely with programs and projects currently involved in lunar exploration, including those associated with Gateway, to integrate their efforts towards the critical path.
Reflecting on his new role and challenges ahead, Garcia-Galan remains enthusiastic: “Who wouldn’t be?”
