Solid-state batteries might not be ready, but gel-like semi-solid state ones are here. They offer safety and performance improvements over traditional liquid electrolytes without the need for a complete overhaul of current technology.
From e-bikes to power banks, these semi-solid state batteries are making their mark. Ride1Up’s Revv1 EVO boasts a battery with 50% more capacity than lithium-ion options, and Giant plans to adopt similar tech in its mass-produced models.
The adoption of these batteries is partly driven by stricter Chinese regulations, which require e-bike batteries to pass puncture tests without igniting. As a result, manufacturers are turning towards semi-solid state solutions that naturally align with these stringent standards.
Chinese phone brands like Vivo have already integrated semi-solid electrolytes into their devices, enhancing energy density and battery life. This trend is set to continue as more industries seek safer and more efficient power solutions.
