The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration is set to launch Artemis II, marking a historic return to the lunar environment. This mission will see the first woman, the first Black person, and the first non-US astronaut travel beyond low Earth orbit.
At the helm of this ambitious journey is Commander Reid Wiseman, with support from his crewmates Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Jeremy Hansen. Their collective experience and diverse backgrounds are crucial for future missions to Mars.
Wiseman’s journey began in the US Navy, where he served as a decorated test pilot and completed two spacewalks during his first mission aboard the Russian Soyuz capsule bound for the International Space Station. His role on Artemis II will be pivotal, requiring both leadership and technical acumen.
Glover, a decorated naval aviator with combat experience, will make history as the first Black person to travel into deep space. He previously served as a capsule communicator and operations officer, contributing significantly to NASA’s ground support teams before his historic flight.
Koch, whose own journey began in engineering and robotics, has set numerous records, including the longest single spaceflight by a woman. Her extensive experience on the International Space Station makes her an invaluable asset for Artemis II's technical evaluations.
