Swatch has once again teamed up with Omega for a limited-edition gold watch, this time going all out with an 18K Moonshine Gold alloy that covers every part of the Mission to the Moon 1969. The commemorative piece marks the Apollo 11 moon landing and offers 1,969 numbered pieces at a price calculated using 1969's gold value.
The watch comes with a black-and-gold rubber strap, making it both stylish and practical. However, obtaining one requires filling out an 'ESTA' or Electronic Swatch Timepiece Application—32 questions deep, echoing the complexity of travel documentation but for a timepiece instead of a trip.
Swatch learned from its previous headache-inducing launches, such as the Royal Pop in May, by making this limited edition available online. Yet, the application system may still face similar challenges as it did with the Royal Pop, potentially leading to more excitement and anticipation among watch enthusiasts.
The timing of the launch, coinciding with the 54th anniversary of the moon landing on July 21st, is perfectly timed for fans of space history. But for the average consumer, the application process might seem like a modern-day lottery, adding an extra layer of mystery to the purchase.
