Federal officials have identified shredded iceberg lettuce from a single Mexican supplier as the source of a nationwide Cyclospora outbreak linked to Taco Bell restaurants in five states. The affected states – Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia – are now under scrutiny.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have urged consumers not to eat iceberg lettuce from Taco Bell in these areas. While grocery stores remain unaffected, this outbreak has been linked to 141 hospitalizations across 34 states, with Michigan reporting over 5,000 cases.
Interestingly, Taylor Farms, the suspected supplier, was previously implicated in a multi-state E. coli outbreak last year. This time, FDA inspectors found multiple violations at its Colorado facility, highlighting the ongoing challenges of food safety regulation.
The CDC is tracking 1,645 laboratory-confirmed cases nationwide, with many more probable cases unaccounted for. As the investigation continues, one can only wonder what other unsuspecting vegetables are lurking in our salad bowls.
