The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is set to launch this month with a revolutionary feature: shape-shifting mirrors that can block out starlight and reveal exoplanets like Jupiter, closer to home than ever before. This technology could pave the way for future telescopes capable of imaging Earth-like worlds.


Unlike previous space-based coronagraphs, Roman's active wavefront control allows it to measure and suppress residual light, improving sensitivity by up to a thousandfold. Its 'silicon grass' masks trap stray photons, ensuring that only planetary light reaches the detector.


This advancement could transform our understanding of exoplanets, moving from 'interviewing a handful of people' to 'conducting a global census'. Astronomers hope it will finally reveal true Jupiter analogues and potentially Earth-like planets orbiting sunlike stars at distances similar to ours.


The telescope's wide-field camera will also help in detecting around 100,000 new exoplanets by observing the distortions caused by their gravitational pull on distant starlight. This could provide a wealth of data on dark matter and dark energy, unlocking more mysteries of the universe.
