Firefighters in France are battling a phenomenon never seen before: pyrocumulonimbus clouds. These towering fire clouds, driven by intense heat and dry conditions, pose an operational impossibility for ground crews. The skies above the flames are not offering relief; instead, they’re spurring more fires through lightning strikes and powerful downdrafts.
These clouds have been documented in other countries like the US and Australia, but until now, France had no record of them. This summer’s wildfires, however, are breaking records: last week alone saw a destructive surge doubling past records, with over 220,000 acres burned so far—six times the average annual total.
The trend is eerily familiar and undoubtedly linked to global warming. A study found that extreme fires globally doubled from 2003 to 2023, with the most severe years occurring since 2016. As temperatures soar again this week, firefighters brace for more intense fire weather.
