It seems we may have underestimated the true extent of damage a powerful solar storm could cause. Recent studies suggest that during extreme events, like the Carrington Event in 1859, the impact on our infrastructure and environment could be twice as severe as previously believed.
Maria Walach from Lancaster University explains: 'Our planet’s magnetic field does a great job protecting us, but there are rare cases where satellites fail or we lose communication signals.' These findings challenge long-held beliefs about the limits of Earth's response to solar wind intensity.
The team used statistical models and regression calibration techniques to correct for uncertainties in data analysis. Their model shows that during catastrophic events, the geomagnetic impact could double compared to traditional modeling methods.
Walach warns: 'We need to be vigilant about space weather effects,' despite the rarity of such extreme events. With only limited historic data on these rare occurrences, it remains a challenge to predict outcomes accurately.
