Quantum Dots: A New Spin on Qubits

Even diamonds aren’t immune to tech’s scaling game.

When it comes to quantum computing, any system that can flip between two states is fair game. From atoms and ions to electrons and manufactured devices, the race is on. One of these technologies involves quantum dots, tiny structures that trap a single electron.

HRL Laboratories, the descendant of Howard Hughes’ research program, has developed new methods using manufactured quantum dots, showing potential in scaling up qubits through familiar semiconductor manufacturing techniques. Their approach could make quantum tech more accessible, much like traditional processors.

Meanwhile, another company is holding 100 electrons in diamond defects—showing that even diamonds can be turned into qubits. IBM’s interest in the technology suggests they see something promising here, despite its unconventional approach to scaling.

The quest for better qubits continues, with each new development bringing us closer—or perhaps just rearranging our understanding of what a computer is made of. It’s clear that innovation doesn’t stop at silicon.
