Chrome Speeds Up: AI Patches 1,072 Bugs in a Month

As AI finds more bugs, the race to fix them gets faster—will we ever catch up?

Google has patched an unprecedented 1,072 security flaws in its Chrome browser over the last two versions released in June, outstripping the total fixed in the previous 23 versions combined. This surge is thanks to internal AI tools that have drastically accelerated vulnerability discovery and patching.

The tech giant's director of engineering, Doug Turner, noted that LLMs are transforming cybersecurity by turning bug hunting into an automated operation. He stated: 'By applying models like Gemini, we are preemptively fixing vulnerabilities, outpacing our adversaries and making Chrome safer with every update.'

Microsoft has also seen a similar trend, announcing it patched 570 security flaws in its products during the same period. However, Apple seems to be lagging behind, having fixed only 482 bugs year-to-date, roughly on pace with previous years.

The exponential increase in bug fixes highlights how effective AI can be in cybersecurity but also raises concerns about the ongoing arms race between defenders and attackers. As Turner points out, this shift is fundamentally changing the economics of cybersecurity.
