Peter Thiel's investment arm Founders Fund has backed a New Zealand startup that uses solar-powered collars to monitor and manage cattle. Halter's innovative system allows farmers to create virtual fences, track animal health, and increase land productivity by up to 20%. The collar combines a network of towers and an app to virtually control where animals graze, improving their efficiency.
The company has seen incredible growth, with over one million cattle across thousands of farms equipped with the technology. Craig Piggott, founder and CEO, highlights the reliability and precision required to manage large herds effectively. Despite competition from rivals like Merck's Vence system and autonomous drone tech, Halter remains focused on its core product—providing farmers with a financial return through improved land use.
Halter’s approach represents an outlier in agricultural technology, which has struggled due to high operational costs and resistance among farmers. However, Piggott attributes the company's success to its relentless focus on financial returns rather than technological superiority. As the tech ecosystem evolves, only time will tell if these solar collars are just a temporary trend or a lasting solution for modern ranch management.
