One week ago, the Link satellite, a refrigerator-size spacecraft built by Katalyst Space Technologies, was tasked with rescuing NASA's Swift gamma-ray observatory. However, the mission took a dramatic turn when the Link began spinning out of control.
The issue emerged just as the ground team lost contact with the satellite during one of its passes without communications. The spacecraft’s reaction wheels, crucial for maintaining stability and direction, stopped functioning, while two were already non-operational. Cold gas thrusters, intended to make finer adjustments in attitude, also encountered problems.
Despite these setbacks, Katalyst's team is determined to recover the satellite. The ground control center near Denver is currently working on a plan that involves using the Link’s plasma engines—designed for raising orbit—to gradually slow its spin and regain stability. This solution requires precise vectoring of thrust with a two-axis gimbal.
The clock is indeed ticking, as NASA has given Katalyst less than a year to complete this mission before Swift's orbit becomes too low for rescue. The first attempt at recovery highlights the challenges faced in space operations and emphasises the growing reliance on commercial companies for satellite servicing.
With every passing day, the Link’s situation is more precarious, but Katalyst remains undeterred. Their success or failure will not only determine Swift's fate but also set a precedent for future commercial space missions.
