Endeavor Optical Networks (EON) aims to revolutionize data transmission by launching a network of laser-equipped satellites. This innovative approach promises faster and more reliable connections, especially for long-distance links where traditional methods fall short.
The company plans to build a constellation of about 20 satellites capable of delivering 2.4 terabits per second, significantly outperforming current satellite communication networks. These lasers will need to overcome atmospheric distortions, a challenge EON is tackling with advanced optics and weather data analysis for constant connectivity.
Target customers include hyperscalers and AI labs, which handle vast amounts of data. EON’s focus on underserved or expensive routes ensures that regions lacking infrastructure can benefit from faster data transfer speeds. The company intends to use its recent seed funding to develop the necessary optics and conduct ground tests before launching their first demo satellite in late 2027.
While EON is pushing boundaries, they are not alone in this endeavor. Blue Origin has also announced plans for a similar project with a larger fleet of satellites. However, EON’s smaller scale might offer quicker deployment, despite the technical hurdles both face in ensuring robust and reliable laser communication links.
