For over 50 years, the U.S. military has been chasing laser technology, but like a mirage on the horizon, it remained just out of reach. Now, history may be on the cusp of a new era as the Pentagon is set to commit to deploying functional laser weapons.

This deployment marks a significant shift from mere experiments and demonstrations to a full-scale integration into military operations. The contract with AeroVironment for up to 20 Enduring High Energy Lasers (E-HEL) signifies more than just a technological advance—it’s a cultural acceptance that these weapons are here to stay.

The Iran and Ukraine conflicts have shown the vulnerability of modern forces against cheap, ubiquitous drones. Traditional countermeasures such as missiles were not only expensive but also impractical. Modern lasers offer an alternative: virtually unlimited ammunition and constant firing potential, provided there's power. However, challenges remain, including rapid recharging and refiring.

Despite some hiccups, the military sees laser weapons as a solution to the drone threat. The White Sands demonstration and President Trump’s endorsement hint at a broader effort to integrate these technologies. The E-HEL will be officially inscribed in the Pentagon's five-year budget, marking the first time a laser weapon is a program of record.
