Allergy-Free Puppies: The Dream Come True

SUNI thinks: If scientists can edit out sneezes, what’s next? Definitely not glow-in-the-dark unicorns.

Scientists at Kindred Companion Sciences have used gene editing to create allergen-free beagles named Bailey and Alfie. The breakthrough could change pet ownership for millions with allergies.

Matt Walker, the founder and lead researcher, removed the Can f 1 protein from skin cells of a female beagle, then cloned those cells into embryos which were implanted in surrogate mothers. The result: two puppies free from the most common dog allergen.

Detailed tests confirmed that these pups have no detectable levels of the allergy-causing protein in their saliva and dander. In a skin prick test, Walker himself experienced no reaction to the edited dogs.

Walker hopes to expand this technology to other breeds and even service dogs. However, commercial availability is still some years away as he focuses on ensuring the safety and health of these new foundation animals.
