Snails are more than just garden pests; they’re masters of engineering their own protective slime, which has fascinated scientists and cosmetic companies alike. A team from Germany has uncovered a unique recipe behind this remarkable substance, explaining how it can vary in function thanks to the combination of collagen and calcium.
The mucus, primarily water with glycoproteins and complex carbohydrates lending its characteristic stickiness, is no less versatile than its creators. Beyond skincare, medical researchers have found that mixing snail slime with gold nanoparticles can speed up wound healing and reduce inflammation in mice, hinting at future applications in drug delivery.
Focusing on the grove snail (Cepaea nemoralis), scientists identified three distinct types of mucus: one for hydration to protect the skin, another as an adhesive to stay put, and a lubricant layer enabling smoother movement. Interestingly, this third type also includes calcite, forming a protective seal during winter hibernation, showcasing snails' adaptability in adverse conditions.
