The European Space Agency is battling a peculiar problem: space travel can cause serious eye issues for astronauts. A condition known as Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS) has affected around 70% of ISS-bound astronauts, leading to vision loss that can be severe.
Enter Siloton, a British startup developing compact eye-scanning technology using quantum tech. The device is smaller than a coin and could enable frequent self-checks by astronauts during deep space missions.
Funded by the ESA, this innovative solution aims to generate more data on ocular changes and potentially detect vision issues before they become irreversible. Challenges include overcoming battery safety concerns and finding a place for the equipment in spacecraft with limited space.
While the risks are daunting, the technology could benefit us all. As Allen notes: 'We're trying to do this with 80-year-old patients who already have some level of visual impairment, whereas these will be highly trained astronauts who are much younger and have full function of their eyes.' The research could lead to better home devices down here on Earth.
