Sonic Fire Tech, a startup in Ohio, has raised $15 million to develop a fire suppression system that uses sound waves. Unlike traditional methods involving water and chemicals, this new technology can extinguish flames within seconds without leaving behind a messy cleanup.
The company's acoustic system involves inaudible sound being pumped through PVC pipes ceiling-mounted. Sensors trigger the sound generator when a fire is detected, with infrasonic waves around 20Hz bombarding the flames. This approach promises quicker response times and lower restoration costs, making it appealing to both insurers and property owners.
Tests have shown promise in containing lithium-ion battery fires, which are notoriously difficult to extinguish. The system's ability to quickly suppress kitchen fires could significantly reduce insurance premiums by minimizing damage from common household accidents. However, the path to widespread adoption will require approval from fire protection associations, a process currently expected to take around three years.
While still in development stages, Sonic Fire Tech is working on systems designed for both commercial and residential use, including an exterior home protection system. Though this has faced delays due to testing constraints, the potential benefits of such technology are clear: fewer catastrophic fires and reduced cleanup costs.
