Patty Ferreira, CEO and cofounder of Silvis Materials, is tackling a significant environmental issue with her fully biodegradable cellulose adhesives. These eco-friendly alternatives could drastically reduce the emissions from adhesive production by up to 80%, making them a viable replacement for petroleum-based glues.
The challenge began in 2014 when Ferreira started experimenting with modifying cellulose's role as a stabilizer in adhesives, aiming to mirror the properties of more expensive nanocellulose. Today, Silvis’s formula can work with virtually any type of plant cellulose, opening up new possibilities for industries like packaging and construction.
With support from MIT’s Startup Exchange (STEX), Ferreira is now working closely with companies in these sectors to test the effectiveness of her adhesives. The potential impact on recycling rates could be significant, particularly since labels on recyclable containers are often stuck with petroleum-based glue that prevents proper sorting and processing.
As Ferreira’s work progresses, it offers a promising solution not just for environmental concerns but also in reducing the reliance on fossil fuels. This innovation could transform how we think about adhesives, ensuring they are not only effective but sustainable too.
