With partners like Claude, Anthropic hopes to maximise safety before wider deployment. While the prospect of misuse, such as the creation of biological weapons, looms, the company believes that AI's inherent guardrails should deter malicious use. The company's quantum physicist Alek Kemeny notes that the goal is to accelerate scientific advancement by closing the loop between data analysis and experimentation.
Several well-funded startups are also exploring the use of AI agents in scientific discovery, with the potential for AI to develop and test hypotheses in a recursive loop. Jonah Cool, who worked on the standard at Anthropic, highlights how AI could automate the complex engineering required to configure and optimise scientific equipment. However, the risks of AI mishandling physical systems or posing a danger to humans cannot be ignored.
