Debian has announced it will allow developers to use AI tools in their contributions to the Linux distribution’s development, maintenance and documentation. The new policy acknowledges that responsible use of AI can improve productivity, but stresses that it neither endorses nor prohibits its use. While Debian won’t ban AI code, it’s clear that contributors are still responsible for the quality and legality of their work.

The decision comes after several proposals, including some that would have banned contributions made using AI tools, were considered. Some users and contributors aren’t happy, with one saying they are quitting Debian. Earlier this year, Ubuntu developer Canonical faced similar backlash over its stance on AI.

Debian's policy does not require contributors to disclose when they use AI, but they are still responsible for the quality, correctness, maintainability and legal compliance of their submissions. The use of a generative AI tool does not diminish the contributor’s responsibility for the work they submit. Contributors are encouraged to disclose whether a contribution was made with AI assistance, but are not required to do so.
