Spotify’s AI Now Curates Podcast Playlists

The future is here: an algorithm that knows what you want to listen to, even if it’s a bit random.

On Tuesday, Spotify expanded its Prompted Playlists feature to include podcasts. This update allows Premium users in the U.S., Canada, U.K. and other select countries to create custom Discover Weekly playlists for podcast episodes using text prompts. The AI takes several minutes to generate the playlist, verifying things like humour along the way.

The process can be hit or miss, with random episodes being pulled from shows that may not fit a chronological listening experience. However, users can edit their prompts and regenerate the playlist if they’re not satisfied. For instance, I asked for a mix of popular Dungeons & Dragons actual play shows and received a wide-ranging selection including Dimension 20 and Critical Role.

Each episode comes with an AI-generated description that, while vague, is generally accurate. The feature can also be set to refresh regularly, giving you new podcast samplers daily or weekly. For those who enjoy exploring new podcasts, this could be a game-changer in discovering hidden gems.
