A physicist has delved into the science behind Star Trek’s iconic ‘Picard maneuver’ from The Battle episode, revealing that the move is not just a plot device but a clever demonstration of a subtle aspect of relativity.
While The Battle shows Picard dodging a deadly attack by firing at a starship he sees as two images, Níckolas de Aguiar Alves from the Federal University of ABC in Brazil noticed an inconsistency. Years later, revisiting the problem, he realized the plot was actually well-founded in the laws of physics, albeit a little-known one.
The physicist explains that although warp speed is purely fictional, the principle of an object traveling faster than light can result in multiple images. This means that if an enemy ship sees two images of the Stargazer, they might hesitate, giving Picard the advantage. This not only makes the maneuver more impressive, but it’s also a fantastic teaching moment for the theory of relativity.
De Aguiar Alves first pondered the episode as a young master’s student, but it was only when he was working on a related problem years later that he revisited it. His detailed analysis could have practical applications in understanding particle behavior in media with slow light speeds, making Picard’s gamble a real-life scientific principle.
