The US House of Representatives has passed legislation requiring AM radio to be included in new cars, a move that could see the simple signal become a standard feature once again.
Proponents argue that AM’s long-range capabilities make it invaluable during emergencies, while opponents, including some major automakers, cite issues with electromagnetic interference, which can degrade the signal quality.
Despite the pushback, the bill is now on its way to the Senate, where it’s hoped it will pass, ensuring AM radio remains a reliable resource for millions of Americans.
The move comes as many car manufacturers are increasingly turning to software-defined vehicles that offer streaming services, but with AM radio now mandated, it looks like some traditional values might be making a comeback.
