Snapchat Considers Time Limits for Teens

Snap Inc. might follow Meta’s lead, but don’t hold your breath.

Snap Inc. has expressed openness to implementing time limits for teen users, following Meta’s recent settlement agreement that includes a two-hour daily limit for young users across its platforms. This move comes as part of a broader industry push to address concerns about app addiction and their impact on youth mental health.

During an interview, Evan Spiegel, CEO of Snap Inc., stated that setting maximum usage times could be a step forward. However, he did not commit to a timeline, noting that the company has been internally considering the matter.

Meta, the owner of Instagram and Facebook, has already agreed to implement stricter time limits and pay an additional $5.3 billion if other major social media companies, including Snapchat and TikTok, follow suit. This settlement was part of a multi-billion dollar legal settlement with US states, which accused Meta of deliberately designing its apps to be addictive to young users.

While Snap currently offers tools through its Family Center feature to help parents monitor how their teens use the app, Spiegel mentioned that the company wants to be part of finding a solution. The announcement of new features for Snap’s upcoming Specs glasses, priced at $2,195 in the US and £1,995 in the UK, also came during the interview, highlighting the company’s push into the wearable tech market.
