Spotify is rolling out a new feature called ‘Taste Profile’ to its Premium subscribers in the U.S., allowing them to see and tweak how the platform understands their musical tastes. The feature, powered by Spotify’s AI, aims to offer users more control over their music and podcast recommendations, including in Discover Weekly playlists and Made for You suggestions.
Users can now make natural language requests to fine-tune their recommendations, seeking more variety or specificity in their tastes. For instance, a user could request to see more energetic tracks or less of a certain genre. This move could be seen as a step towards empowering users over the often opaque algorithms that shape their listening experiences.
While the feature is still in beta and currently available only to a limited number of users, it could be a game-changer for those who find their recommendations too homogenous. For the rest of us, it might just be another step towards a more personalized digital life.
Spotify unveiled Taste Profile at the SXSW conference in March, but it was initially only available to listeners in New Zealand. Now, with the feature launching in the U.S., it will be put to a larger test among a wider audience. The feature could also be used to remove recommendations based on music that users regularly stream but do not necessarily care to see more of.
Until now, Spotify has offered some options to remove music from your Taste Profile, but they only let you exclude certain tracks or playlists. More recently, the company added a much-requested toggle switch that would prevent kids’ music from impacting their parents’ recommendations. The new Taste Profile feature could be a significant step towards giving users more control over their digital lives.
