Instagram has extended its content restrictions based on movie ratings to all countries where it operates, starting with thirteen-plus movies. The move follows enforcement in Australia, Canada, the UK and US last October. Meta claims these new filters will reduce exposure to extreme violence, sexual nudity, or drug use.
The company has introduced a 'Limited Content' setting that further restricts posts with strong language, risky stunts, and marijuana paraphernalia. However, they acknowledge no system is perfect and are committed to continual improvement.
Following legal challenges in New Mexico and Los Angeles, Meta faces increased scrutiny for teen mental health. The company has taken steps such as notifying parents of potential self-harm searches, introducing parental controls, and pausing access to AI characters while developing new versions.
The Motion Picture Association had previously demanded that Meta stop using the PG 13 branding, stating that movie ratings do not equate to social media content. Despite this, Meta now aligns these settings more closely with teens' exposure to age-appropriate content on Instagram.
